Kochi: An air condition panel in the C-2 AC coach of Kozhikode-Thiruvananthapuram Jan Shatabdi Express caught fire creating panic among passengers on Monday. However, a major mishap was averted by the timely intervention of an AC attendant, who was traveling in the coach.
The incident occurred when a short circuit caused fire as the train entered Ernakulam South railway station from the North station here at 5.30 pm.
Uma Maheshwaran, an AC attendant with Thiruvananthapuram railway depot, swung into action dousing flames and snapping all the electrical circuits immediately. He sustained burns on his hands in the process.
The train was halted at the south railway station for half and hour following the incident. The train resumed its journey after passengers in the C-2 coach were shifted to other coaches. Uma Maheshwaran continued his journey in the same train after receiving first aid.
