Always reach office properly dressed. You never know when your attire may invite misfortune. This has happened to a cabin-in-charge, working with Air India. The cabin-in-charge was offloaded by the commander of a US-bound flight at the Mumbai airport on Saturday morning after he allegedly found her shabbily dressed.

The incident was reported when the attendant reported for duty for the 2.45 a m AI flight 191 to Newark.

“All the cabin crew members reported to the commander at the airport ‘movement control’ as is the practice. That was when he saw that she was very shabbily dressed,” an official said adding that “her kurta and trousers were crumpled while her footwear wasn’t clean”.

It’s generally the cabin-in-charge’s duty to ensure that all flight attendants are in the prescribed uniform and have turned up as per the airline’s standards. Here, since the person dressed shabbily was the supervisor, the commander took action.

She has been with the airline for over 20 years,” said the source. Being cabin-in-charge, she would have worked in the first class. “The commander apparently told her, ‘Madam, I’m sorry, I can’t take you on board in this condition.’ A replacement was found and the flight departed without her,” the official added.

An Air India spokesperson confirmed the incident saying, “employee indiscipline in any form cannot be tolerated.” Every airline has some conduct rules, the spokesperson said, adding that the commander of the flight can take action against a staffer found to be flouting the rules.
