While the state government today reduced the bus fare by four paise to eight paise per km, terming it as a New Year gift for the commuters, the BJP claimed it was a correct decision that had come too late.

State BJP president Kamal Sharma claimed the government had reduced the fares because the BJP had been raising the demand at government meetings. The party had also written to the Chief Minister in this regard.

Fuel prices, especially that of diesel, have come down by over Rs 8 in the past few months.

State Transport Minister Ajit Singh Kohar claimed it was for the first time in the history of the state that bus fares hade been reduced. “It is a New Year gift to the people of the state. The new fares will come into force from tomorrow,” he said.

Kohar said for ordinary buses the earlier fare was 91 paise/per km which would now be 87 paise/per km. In case of ordinary HVAC buses, the fares had been cut to 104.4 paise/per km from 109.2 paise/per km.

The integral coaches (de luxe) would now charge fares at 156.6 paise/per km instead of 163.8 paise/per km. The super integral coaches (Volvo) would charge at 174 paise/per km against the earlier 182 paise/per km.
