Speeding on NH: You’ll be caught even if you slow down near cameras
The Motor Vehicles Department has a solution to nab those who over-speed on national highways and slow down when they come near a camera. They are now going to use a technique of calculating the speed of the vehicle as it cross between two cameras and fine over-speeding.
This would be implemented along Valayar-Vadakkancherry highway in its first phase.
The department has already taken measures to install surveillance cameras along 54km stretch of NH 544. A total of 37 cameras would be installed along this stretch at a distance of about 2 km apart. KELTRON is in charge of installing this and it is expected to get ready within the next 45 days.
With the installation of the cameras the speed limit along this stretch would be capped at 90 km/hr. The cameras would also be made use of to detect vehicles that speed away after an accident, and also the ones involved in criminal activities.
There would also be a facility to intimate the police if the number plate of a vehicle under search catches the lens of the camera. The numbers of vehicles under search are already fed into the server in the control room.
