Last week the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) showed an exemplary gesture of gratitude to the hundreds of migrant labourers who worked day and night for years to make the metro rail a reality, by treating them with a traditional banquet, ‘Sadhya’.
On Sunday, the day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Rs 5,181 crore project, Kochi Metro officials took their appreciation to the workforce by offering them a ride on the metro lines which they built.
They traveled from Palarivattom to Aluva and back on the metro on Sunday.

Majority of the workers who were involved in the construction work of the rail project are migrant workers who reached the state under their contract heads from Bengal or Bihar.

Commenting on same, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said he was,
“Extremely glad to see these happy faces, Well done KMRL for recognizing the efforts of all these workers of Kochi Metro Project”.
He also lauded the contribution of the migrant workers who made the metro a reality.
Kerala has been for long dependent on migrant workers, mostly from Assam, Bengal and Bihar in a number of sectors, including construction. Many of them are attracted to the state due to the relatively higher wages on offer, which is still lesser than what the locals might get for the same task.
