Is Goods and Services Tax (GST) applicable to parking fee? That seems to be indeed the case, if you are parking your vehicle at the Mysuru Road satellite bus stand.
The contractor at the parking lot here has been issuing tickets that say that the parking rates include 18 per cent of GST. Rates too had gone up, till an official visited to take stock of the situation and warned against any such action.
When BM visited the site, this correspondent too was issued a similar ticket. When questioned, the contractor, had this to say, “Please don’t ask me about the hike in parking charges because of GST.” Mohammed Sohail, a sales executive, who had parked his bike at the parking lot could not believe that he was being forced to pay GST tax on his parking fee. “What nonsense is this? Will they collect GST for parking too?” he said.
Other parking lots, however, had not included GST in the ticket.
When we asked KSRTC about this, an official said, “I have received complaints about the inclusion of GST. I have warned the bidder not to collect GST in parking bill. If I come across such a complaint again in the coming days, I will have to take action as per the contract rules,” he said.
