The rupture of a water pipe in the Ukrainian capital resulted in a spectacular burst from underground, with a water jet reaching seven stories high, according to local media.
The incident left several cars damaged and a street covered in mud. Luckily no one was hurt.
The pipe failure happened Monday in the southern part of Kiev during a hydraulic test conducted by the municipal utility company Kievenergo.
The moment that pressure, built up in an underground cavity, was finally released in a massive eruption was caught on CCTV cameras.
The rupture occurred to a pipeline of 800mm (31.4 inches) in diameter, Kievenergo said in a statement cited by Ukrainian media. During the hydraulic tests, it was discovered that the cause of the incident was a debilitating section of the heating network, which is 38 years old and has far exceeded its 25-year usage norm.
