Indian police forces & their motorcycles
It’s not just the Royal Enfield Bullet that the Indian cops use as their official vehicle. Right now, almost the entire police force of this country has upgraded to modern, faster, and more reliable motorcycles. Here’s a look at the motorcycles that the police forces of various Indian states use.
Honda CBR 250R : Uttar Pradesh Police
It was in 2013 that Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) showcased the Police edition of the CBR 250R motorcycle at the Security Expo. Soon, thereafter, this motorcycle was inducted into the police force of Uttar Pradesh. While the Police edition of the CBR 250R that we saw at the Security Expo came with LED lamps, beacon lights, public announcement system and a specially designed helmet with a handsfree microphone, none of these featured made it to the CBR 250Rs being used by the Uttar Pradesh police. However, these bikes do retain the Police livery and the utility box. The CBR 250R is a refined, comfortable and sufficiently fast motorcycle. We’re pretty sure the UP cops love this bike.
Bajaj Pulsar : Delhi Police, Punjab Police
The Bajaj Pulsar is another motorcycle that is being used by police forces across the country. In Delhi, this motorcycle is used by both traffic police and civilian police. The Pulsar motorcycles used by the Delhi police don’t have a rev limiter, which is something that helps the cops extract the most out of their motorcycles. These Pulsars are mostly the 180-cc variant. We believe that the Pulsar 180’s punchy motor and low maintenance costs make it a well-rounded official motorcycle for the police forces.
Harley-Davidson Street 750 : Gujarat Police, Kolkata Police
It is the police force of Gujarat that became the first one in India to induct Harley-Davidson motorcycles in their fleet of official motorcycles. Later, even the Kolkata Police inducted many Harley-Davidson motorcycles in their fleet. The cop bikes have a special livery, utility box, public announcement system and beacons.
It’s said that the Kolkata Police decided to upgrade to Street 750 as their Royal Enfield motorcycles were incapable of keeping up with the fast-moving VIP convoys. Both the Gujarat Police and the Kolkata Police use these Harley-Davidsons on special occasions only and not for patrolling.
TVS Apache : Noida Police, Kerala Police, Tamil Nadu Police, Delhi Police
Like the Bajaj Pulsar, the TVS Apache is another fun-to-ride motorcycle that has made it to the fleet of a police force of this country. Actually, the TVS Apache RTR 180 and RTR 160 are being used by not one, but many police forces of India. For example, the Gautam Budh police force, which manages the Noida region, uses the RTR 180 to intercept vehicles that run away from the police check posts.
Royal Enfield motorcycles : Mumbai Police, Kolkata Police, Delhi Police, UP Police, Rajasthan Police
The Royal Enfield Bullet was the first motorcycle to become the official two-wheeler of the Indian Army. After the Bullet proved its mettle in the Army, police forces of several Indian states started using Royal Enfield bikes. Even today, the police forces in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and several big cities have Royal Enfield motorcycles in their fleet. That said, most of these bikes are now being replaced with modern motorcycles that are faster, more reliable and easier to maintain.
Hero Splendor : Goa Police
The police force in Goa uses the humble Hero Splendor. We feel that it’s the perfect patrolling bike for the narrow lanes of Goa. The motorcycles’ compact and fuel-efficient nature, along with its high reliability, makes it a good option for low-speed patrolling in the urban environment.
Hero Achiever : Mumbai Police
The policewomen force of Mumbai uses the Hero Achiever as their official vehicle. The Achiever is a sufficiently powerful, reliable and lightweight motorcycle that can be easily managed by policewomen.
Hero Duet : Jaipur Police
While most police forces use geared motorcycles, the women cops of the Jaipur police force have started using the Hero Duet scooter. These scooters have been retrofitted with Public Announcement systems and Police stickers.
Honda Activa : Delhi Police, Gurugram Police
Even the policewomen in the Delhi Police force use an automatic scooter, the highly successful Honda Activa. The Honda Activa is even used by the policewomen of the Gurgaon Police force.
Hero motorcycles : Udaipur Police
The police force of Udaipur recently launched an all-women police-patrol squad. The woman officers use modified Hero motorcycles as their official vehicles. These motorcycles come with beacons, police stickers and public Announcement stickers.
