Dirt-covered seats in the buses operated by it has landed the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) in a spot of trouble with the Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC).

The Commission on Friday instructed the KSRTC to take stern action against its cleaning staff who fail to keep the seats on KSRTC buses clean.

Action should also be taken against their supervisors if necessary, Commission chairman Justice J B Koshy said. The Commission’s order came on a petition filed by journalist Yusuf Ansari.

Ansari pointed out in his complaint that he regularly commutes to Thiruvananthapuram in connection with his job. By the end of the trip, his mundu and the back of his shirt end up soiled from the dirt on the seat.

When he approached the Controlling Inspector with his complaint, he was asked to write it down in the complaint book. Taking note of Ansari’s complaint, the Commission asked the KSRTC to keep the seats in its buses clean. In fact, it is the duty of the KSRTC to ensure that seats are clean, the order said. A copy of the proceedings has been sent to the Managing Director, KSRTC, according to a statement issued by the Commission.
