The Kerala Excise officials on Saturday seized over Rs 51 lakh in Rs 2,000 denominations. This comes as a major haul of currency in the past three days in the state.

The money was seized from two passengers of a bus coming from Bengaluru. The officials recovered Rs 51.80 lakh in Rs 2,000 and Rs 100 notes worth Rs 6,300 in the bags of passengers Ranjith Salangi and Rahul Adhik alias Rahul Ghatoo.

Both are 24 and 22 years old and hail from Maharashtra. They were carrying the cash without any supporting documents following which they were detained. The haul comes two days after the cops seized Rs 39.9 lakh in Rs 2,000 denomination at Tirur area in the Malappuram district.

The officials said today’s seizure was made when a special excise squad intercepted the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus near Payyanur in the afternoon following a tip-off.

The due from whom the money was seized were taken into custody and will be questioned by the Income Tax officials. Earlier, the police had on Friday busted a currency exchange racket and seized Rs 3 lakh from Shoukat Ali who is also facing a hawala case already.
