A single bench of the Kerala High Court has upheld the decision of the Director of the Board of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to peg the retirement age of its employees at 58.
The decision to raise the retirement age has been kept in abeyance following the State Government’s opposition to the Director Board proposal.
The Court has also directed the State Government to reconsider its position on the issue.
Justice V Chidambaresh issued the order upholding the KSRTC Director Board decision on Wednesday while considering a batch of petitions challenging the State Government’s decision.
The learned single judge observed that there was nothing wrong in pegging the retirement age of KSRTC employees at 58, and that the Director Board arrived at the decision taking into account the present economic situation of the Corporation.
The counsel appearing for the State Government argued that the KSRTC employees were bound by the rules governing government employees since they came under the purview of the Kerala Service Rules.
However, the learned judge brushed aside this contention, directing the Government to reconsider its opposition to the proposal to raise the retirement age.
