In the first signs of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation becoming professional, key decision-making posts like Assistant Transport Officer and District Transport Officer would be open to direct recruiting soon besides fixing minimum qualification for all candidates.

“Sixty per cent of the key posts will be subject to direct recruitiment – those from outside with good qualification like MBA. Twenty-five per cent posts will continue to be filled by the current criteria while the rest 15 will be open to internal candidates possessing high educational qualifications. This is part of the efforts to make the corporation professional,” K.M. Irshad, Executive Director (Operations), told DC.

Currently, almost all the posts are being filled by the ‘first- come, first- served’ exercise which resulted in low-qualified personnel being entrusted with critical decision-making tasks.

“Besides, the candidates will have to pass tests in the Manual of Office Procedure and other internal exams to get the actual posting,” the official said.

With the operation of bus services in loss, the corporation has diversified its activities by setting up shopping malls and renting out the space its multi-storey buildings at major bus stations. However, only three depots – Kasargod, Kottarakkara and Kattakada- are profitable, revealing the flaw in the decision-making process.

Meanwhile, the corporation has decided to recreate the post of Vehicle Mobility Officers after almost two decades in a bid to boost the employee morale.
