KSRTC hopes increased revenue next month

The marginal increase on daily collection of schedules operating from city based bus depots has prompted the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation to continue with the reforms.

The KSRTC had a month ago modified its schedules to cut loses and also to rake in more collection. The daily collection, though showed a marginal increase, fell short of the expected revenue.

During the past month, the collection in city depots, varied from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 a day.

The KSRTC management had introduced the single duty system and modified the schedules to improve the revenue collection from bus services on July 15. It modified the duty pattern and schedules after the initial move to modified schedules returning Rs 7000 or below did not raise to its expectation.

Among the KSRTC depots, the city depot received Rs 60,000, the highest in daily collection. The average daily collection at the depot was Rs 9 lakh, which increased to Rs 9.6 lakh in last month.

As many as 42 schedules, earning a revenue of less than Rs 7,000, were modified to achieve this result.

The Peroorkada depot of KSRTC modified 17 schedules out of the 76 operating from the terminal. The rescheduling increased the average daily collection from Rs 6.3 lakh to Rs 6.50 lakh.

An improvement in revenue of Rs 30,000 was recorded at Vikas Bhavan, where 42 schedules—out of 75–were modified. The daily revenue increased from Rs 6.7 lakh to Rs 7 lakh. However, Pappanamcode depot of KSRTC, the revenue has not improved much from average of Rs 6.5 lakh to 7 lakh. Around 32-odd schedules at the depot were changed and the depot now receives a minimum daily revenue of Rs 7 lakh.

According to chief traffic officer D Rajendran, the revenue is likely to increase the next month, as the people do not prefer to travel during this time of the year.
“People tend to travel less during this month, so it is expected that the results of modified duty pattern could be assessed by next month-end. The city-based depots have recorded a perceptible increase in revenue,” said Rajendran.
The modified schedules in these depots are mostly bus services catering to rural areas. Following the assessment of revenues, the present target revenue of the depots will be changed and the decision to further change or cancel schedules will be taken by the transport corporation.
