The KSRTC on Friday laid off temporary staff serving at its various workshops en masse.
In total, 210 employees have lost their jobs.
The terminated staff were serving at the Kozhikode, Edappal, Mavelikkara and Aluva depots.
While 35 employees were attached to the Kozhikode depot, 65 were serving at Mavelikkara and 55 in Edappal and Aluva altogether.
The employees said the action was taken without serving them notice.
Some of them, who joined duty for the morning session, were told that they were relieved off duty in the afternoon.
The terminated employees include those serving for the past 10 years and also differently-abled candidates.
Protesting against the action, the employees gheraoed the KSRTC regional workshop manager. Reacting to move, the Kerala State Road Transport Employees’ Association (KSRTEA) said the layoff cannot be accepted.
The management in their explanation said the decision was taken owing to cessation of bus body building works.
However, sources said financial crisis forced the corporation to arrive at the decision.
