Close to launching the super deluxe inter-state bus at Ernakulam, the KSRTC is all set to launch Volvo multi-axle buses in the coming days. According to Ernakulam ATO S K Suresh, they have received word from the management that they would receive two new Volvo buses on Thursday. The buses will be operated towards Bangalore initially. Recently, the KSRTC has purchased 10 new Volvo multi-axle buses from Bangalore to gear up their inter-state sector. The services will be operated from Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Kozhikode.

“The timings of the buses will only be finalised once we receive the buses. A month ago, the KSRTC Ernakulam depot had started operating a super deluxe service towards Bangalore at 6.30 pm. The timings of the service will be fixed as per the demands of the public,” ATO Suresh said.

Training to operate these services are currently being imparted to selected drivers from the Ernakulam depot.

The new buses are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and also has a provision for exit doors. Last week, a KSRTC inter-state Volvo bus was stopped by RTO officials at Bangalore for failing to have installed emergency exits in the bus. However, it was later resolved as the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) argued with Karnataka RTO officials that most of the buses operating from Karnataka don’t have speed governors as per the Motor Vehicle Department norms in Kerala. Even though speed governors are mandatory in Kerala, it is not so in Karnataka. Similarly, the MVD rules defined in the state of Kerala does not demand emergency exits.

The KSRTC has currently availed a loan of `10 crore from the Kerala State Transport Workers Society (KSTWS)for the purpose of purchasing the buses.
