The Maharajas’ Express – a luxury train operated by IRCTC – will begin running through Kerala from September. The train currently travels in the Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan circuits now.
Two new routes which have been charted out in the project.
In the first route, the train starts from Mumbai and passes through Goa, Hampi, Mysuru, Ernakulam and Alappuzha to reach Thiruvananthapuram. On return, the train starts from Thiruvananthapuram and passes through Mahabalipuram, Mysore and Hampi to reach Mumbai,
Majoirty of passengers of the luxury train are foreigners. It is the most expensive luxury train in Asia.
The train will halt for one day in Ernakulam South and Thiruvananthapuram. The train will bring tourists from Mumbai to Kerala and will take back the tourists to Mumbai. Keralites too can travel in the luxury train.
However, the public will not be allowed to see the train due to security issues. The train is run as part of tour package only.
As Maharaja Express is one of the most luxurious trains, a single journey can cost up to Rs 4 lakh to Rs 16 lakh (inclusive of food and water). There are five deluxe cabins, six junior suites, two suites, one presidential suite, one bar and two restaurants in the train.
