The MSRTC plans to purchase 70 brand new Shivneri AC buses, of which 35 will be Volvo buses while the remaining will be Scania buses, popular in Europe.
Sources informed TOI that three Scania buses are likely to be inducted into the MSRTC fleet by month-end and they would ply on either of the three Shivneri routes—Mumbai-Pune, Thane-Pune and Pune-Aurangabad. These are three busy Shivneri routes of the transport corporation. The MSRTC operates more than a hundred trips between Mumbai and Pune.
The Sweden-based company Scania has already entered the Indian market and sold its buses to the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. “The Scanias will be a premium coach plush interior, seating and a huge luggage space,” an MSRTC source said. It is learnt that the buses will have 2×2 pushback seats which will be semi-sleeper. Each bus will cost the MSRTC over an estimated crore rupees. There are also plans to purchase 35 Volvo buses within six months, sources said.
