The Public Works Department is all set to create history by commissioning a major bridge on MC Road at Pandalam on Wednesday, one month ahead of its original schedule.

The PWD had begun reconstruction of the Kurunthottayam Bridge on MC Road in Pandalam town on July 12 with a gestation period of six months so that it could be commissioned in mid-January, 2017.

The vehicular traffic on MC Road was diverted through the Kulanada-Thumpamon Road from July first week following the demolition of the old bridge, causing much inconvenience to the public as well as motorists. Public Works Department Minister G. Sudhakaran, has been closely monitoring the progress of work on the new bridge.

The Minister said the government had taken every step to open the new bridge for vehicular traffic before the ensuing Makaravilakku pilgrimage season itself as a large number of pilgrims visit Pandalam for the Thiruvabharanam darshan at the Pandalam Palace.

Mr. Sudhakaran inaugurated the bridge at a public function to be held in Pandalam town on Wednesday. Chittayam Gopakumar, MLA,  preside over the function. Water Resources Minister Mathew T. Thomas was the chief guest at the function. The 19.35-metre long, 14.6-metre wide new concrete bridge has a 1.5-metre wide pedestrian pathway on either side.
