The swanky new international terminal (T-3) of the Cochin International Airport., spread over 15 lakh square feet, will be commissioned in the second week of March.

The Rs. 1,100-crore project has an apron of 25,95,025 sq ft, constructed alongside T-3 for taxiing aircraft from the runway and docking at the new terminal. The facility also has a flyover and kerb.

There are five entry gates, 84 check-in counters and 80 immigration/ emigration counters.

“The 15-lakh sq ft space built on three levels is 2.5 times bigger than the existing two terminals taken together.

The building has world-class commercial facilities such as snack bars, food courts, retail shops, viewers’ gallery, ATM counters, foreign exchange counters, business-class lounges, pharmacy, and medical inspection rooms,” said Cochin International Airport Limited Director A.C.K. Nair.

He added that the baggage handling system would have the country’s first 360-degree CT-based four in-line scanners with 3D imaging facility. “Seamless and speedy handling of baggage will be carried out using modern conveyor belts stretching up to 5.5 km with 777 drives and flight-wise and airline-wise sorting mechanisms. There will be 10 aerobridges,” he said.

Dinesh Kumar C., Head of Operations, CIAL, said the new terminal would have state-of-the-art security equipment including around 3,000 full HD cameras, biometric access control for all stakeholders, high-end security gate house, boom barriers and bollards, and 21 metal detectors.

Other features include imported fire detection system with 700 fire detectors, external and internal hydrants and 3,000 sprinklers. The new facility has 10 escalators, 21 elevators and three moving walkways, he added.
