Instances of attack against women are no secret and women have spoken up against it. However, the mass molestation at Bengaluru on the last night of December 2017, sent shock waves across the country.

While majority women took on social media to condemn the incident and to share their experiences, a girl from Kerala decided to write a letter to the mother of a boy, her friend.

Ashmi Soman, an engineering graduate, posted the letter on her Facebook page, reveals the hollowness of the society while responding to incidents of violence against women. It also speaks about the role of women in such incidents.

The letter addressed to her friend’s mother mentions about Bengaluru molestation. It says that people often criticize the dressing style of women for such incidents and asks whether a two-year-old and a grandmother was attacked due to their ‘provoking’ dressing.

She asks why the mother, who told her not to go out alone and ensure dignity in behavior did not dare to teach his boy that a girl is not merely a commodity, that no one has the right to touch her without her permission, should respect her personality.

In the letter, Ashmi also speaks about the mental issues faced by women undergoing sexual harassment. She also criticizes the society, which is imposing new rules for women whenever a new incident of harassment surfaces.
