Operation Thunderbolt to seize bikes making deafening noise
The Motor Vehicle Department has strengthened actions against bikes that make deafening noise leading to noise pollution. They have seized more than 100 bikes the other day during inspection. The bikes were found to have removed the silencer and fitted with a pipe that looks like one. This is a sheer violation of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The normal noise level for bikes and bullets is up to 92 decibels. But these bikes that have no proper silencers produce 10 times more noise, which is harmful for the health of heart patients and children. The extra fittings are found to have been fixed largely on bullets. As per the records, the most number of bullets are used in Karunagappally. Many complaints have been lodged in the MVD office here. Consequently, they initiated Operation Thunderbolt in order to seize such bikes. About 40 bikes were seized in the checking held on Friday night.
The seized bikes were fined and silencers destroyed on the spot. Fixing fake silencers is a crime that can be charged with at least Rs 2000 as penalty. The High Court has ordered that the license of those found guilty of the crime can be cancelled. There many shops in Karunagappally which replace the silencers with duplicate ones. As a next step of the mission, action will be taken against these shops as well, informed MVD officials. The illegally parked vehicles also are being taken into custody.
