A week-long road safety event organized by regional transport authorities kicked off in Madurai city on Sunday morning. A large number officials and elected representatives of people took part in the inauguration of the 27th road safety week at the Mattuthavani integrated bus terminal.

 The road safety week is celebrated throughout the state to create awareness on the traffic rules and regulations and reduce the number of road accidents. The state government has allocated Rs 65 crore to conduct the awareness week which will go on till January 16. The officials have planned several activities at various places in the city. They plan to reach out to more students and organise activities involving students this year.
Minister for cooperation Sellur K Raju, Mayor V V Rajan Chellappa, Madurai district collector L Subramanian and officials from the transport department and the police department took part in the inauguration. A photo exhibition sensitising people about the causes of death on the road and the importance of following traffic rules has been set up at the Mattuthavani bus terminal.
Officials and elected representatives distributed pamphlets to the public and urged them to use the road carefully.
