Royal Enfield Interceptor being STOLEN from showroom in broad daylight [Video]
Car and motorcycle thefts are quite common in India but this is probably the first known case of the theft of a Royal Enfield Interceptor. The incident took place in Chennai where the thief posed as a customer and took a test ride of Interceptor. But he never returned back with the bike. The police are still looking for the stolen motorcycle and the thief.
Before the successful attempt, the thief first visited the Royal Enfield official showroom in Jafferkhanpet in Chennai to test ride the bike. However, he went there with a friend who wasn’t allowed to accompany the thief for the test ride of the bike. The person did not return with the test ride bike for a long time, the Royal Enfield showroom officials detained his friend at the showroom, which forced the person to return with the bike.
After the unsuccessful effort, he again went to another showroom of Royal Enfield, which is located at Chromepet, Chennai. However, this time around, his friend did not accompany him, which made things easy. This time, he used the same strategy of taking the motorcycle for a test ride from the showroom but this time he did not return at all. The state police are currently looking for the stolen motorcycle and the thief. They are also scanning footage of the showroom and surrounding areas.
It is not known if the thief any identification document at the time of the test ride. Most of the showrooms send a person to accompany the test ride vehicle and keep identification documents like driving license to avoid such mishaps. It is quite possible that the showroom in Chromepet did not follow this process, which may make it difficult for the cops to track down the bike or the thief. It is not known if the bike had a permanent registration number or had a temporary number. It is easier to track down vehicles with permanent registration plates.
It is a bizarre theft case as most Indian dealerships ensure that their dealership official is accompanying the vehicle during the test ride. The CCTV footage shows the rider taking the bike out of the showroom during the test ride alone. To avoid cases of theft, one can install an aftermarket GPS tracking system, which is extremely affordable and is very reliable to track down stolen vehicles.
The Royal Enfield Interceptor and Continental GT are currently selling like hot cakes in the market. They were launched at a very surprising price in the Indian market last year and both the bikes have gained a lot of attention in the market. There is a waiting period between 3 months to 6 months depending on the colour of the bike.
Both the bikes are powered by an all-new air-cooled, parallel-twin 649cc engine that fires at 270 degrees. The engine churns out a maximum power of 47 Bhp and a peak torque of 52 Nm. It gets a 6-speed transmission with the slipper clutch as standard. The bike also gets front and rear disc brakes with dual-channel ABS as standard.
