When a Diesel Locomotive Starts, it consumes almost 3-4 times more fuel than its average fuel consumption. That is why Railways prefer to keep the engine running even if the halt at a station is for 30 minutes. If we turn off the engine and turn it on again in 30 minutes, the diesel consumed would be around 350 liters for a normal huge locomotive, in this much amout of fuel, Locomotive could have gone for around 100 KMs that is a running of like 2 hours.
