Tata Tiago Electric, Tata Tigor Electric debuts at 2018 Auto Expo

With rising focus on EVs in the Indian context, companies have been eager to showcase their latest EVs which they plan to bring out for the public in the near future.

The home-grown car manufacturer, Tata Motors too has displayed two of its EVs, the all-electric versions of the Tiago & the Tigor at the 2018 Auto Expo. Both the EVs are powered by a 3-phase AC induction motor which produces a peak power output of 30kW at 4,500 RPM.

Both, the Tiago & Tigor EVs look very similar to their fossil-fuel gulping counterparts. However, to differentiate, there are subtle hints like the EV badging on the exterior, a blue accent strip on the fog lamps, an unique knob like gear lever and the blue decals, which might not continue in the production version.

The EVs draw their power from a 216 Ah 16V battery pack which provide a total range of 130 km on full charge. A regular charger charges the battery completely in 6 hours however; with a fast charger one can charge the battery from 0-80% in just 90 minutes.

Notably, Tata Motors had won a major tender of 10,000 electric vehicles from the government-run Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) last year, however, the numbers were reduced due to a partial order being passed on to Mahindra. The deliveries of the first set of Tigor EVs to the government started in December 2017.

Post an official launch for the public, the Tiago EV would compete with the Mahindra e2O Plus and the Tigor EV would lock horns with the Mahindra e-Verito. Expect prices to commence around the 9-10 lakh INR range.
