Thiru-Kochi bus service soon to get ‘city fast’ tag

KSRTC has been striving very long to make Thiru-Kochi services a profitable venture. But things did not work out as expected and now the corporation is aiming for a makeover by converting it into a ‘city fast’. The corporation is banking on the Ananthapuri fast model that clicked in Thiruvananthapuram.

As part of the move, KSRTC will change the name and colour of Thiru-Kochi buses and reduce the number of stoppages on its route.

“We plan to rechristen the service as ‘Kochi City Fast’ or something similar. When we implement the new model, our buses will operate like fast passengers and we will have to cut down the stoppage. No concession rate will be allowed. The same will be implemented in Kozhikode where Malabar buses are plying exclusively in the city,” said a senior official of KSRTC in Thiruvananthapuram.

The colour of the bus will also be changed from the existing blue and white. The name and colour of the service will be decided later, he said.
Recently, the corporation had re-routed Thiru-Kochi buses to garner more income. Buses that collect Rs 7,500 per day are conducting services now. The service was started in 2010 following frequent, lightning strikes by private buses. Ernakulam depot has 35 Thiru-Kochi buses, but only 26 are conducting services. The total daily collection from these buses is only Rs 2 lakh, the official said. Meanwhile, Ananthapuri fast has 90 buses to conduct service. The daily collection from a bus is Rs 10,000 to Rs 16,000.
