After more than a year, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses and private buses plying between Coimbatore and Tirupur have now resumed service from Gandhipuram Central Bus Stand. In the first week of February last year, buses from Coimbatore to Tirupur via Palladam and Avinashi were diverted to Singanallur Bus Stand.

It was part of the efforts to decongest Dr. Nanjappa Road for the construction of flyover. While the buses were asked to terminate their service at Singanallur, they were later allowed to operate till KG Theatre for the convenience of passengers. During the same time, buses to Mettupalayam were shifted to the bus stand on Mettupalayam Road. The changes were also notified in the gazette.

The Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Coimbatore Central, S. Udhayakumar said that the decision to allow vehicles to resume operation from the Central Bus Stand from June 3, Friday, was taken after consulting with the highways department that has taken up the flyover construction work.

“Highways officials and the city police said that resuming bus service from Gandhipuram to Tirupur will not affect the remaining construction work,” he added.

424 trips

Transport officials said that a total of 102 TNSTC and private buses operate between Coimbatore and Tirupur, making 424 trips a day. Only those buses that have obtained an order from court to operate till Gandhipuram have resumed their operation to Gandhipuram. The other buses would continue to terminate their service at the Singanallur Bus Stand.

The buses were earlier terminated at Singanallur bus stand to facilitate flyover work
