Video of schoolkids trying to board crowded KSRTC bus goes viral

A video of schoolchildren trying to board a crowded KSTRC bus in Shivamogga district of Karnataka has gone viral on social media. The video shows just how the little kids have to risk their lives for travelling from school to home and back.

The video shows small girls hanging precariously from the footboard of the bus and trying to get a grip on the railing bar of the window. The video was recorded on August 1 when the KSRTC bus was plying between Sagara and Barur.

The incident was reported on Thursday on a KSRTC bus plying between Sagara and Barur route in Shivamogga district.

According to KSRTC’s Shivamoga divisional officers, the bus (KA-17 F-1717) belongs to Sagara depot. “We have sent an official on Saturday to conduct a survey. There was no major traffic choke on this route, and at this particular time of incident, line checking staff was inside the bus. We will once again conduct a route survey and add additional trips during school time,” said a KSRTC official from Shivamogga divisional office.

The video has once highlighted poor bus services provided in rural parts of the state. While most residents in rural areas rely on private vehicles and autos, students with concessional passes are left with few options.

Experts fear students would have been piled on top of each other in case of an untoward incident. It also raises the possibility of harassment of female passengers travelling during peak hours.

KSRTC managing director Shivayogi C Kalasad has sought an explanation from the concerned authorities and has decided to issue fresh guidelines.
